Colorado's Circular Firing Squad on the Second Amendment

Colorado continues to follow California’s lead, finding itself at the forefront of proposed new laws which will negatively impact Second Amendment rights, making it both more difficult and more expensive to practice the fundamental right of self defense with a firearm.
Seven different bills have emerged so far, causing outrage among citizens who value their constitutional freedoms. Now, more than ever, it is crucial for residents to voice their opposition and take immediate action to protect their rights.
These bills underscore the importance of remaining vigilant and proactive in defending Second Amendment rights. Every citizen has both the right and the power to influence the legislative process by contacting their elected officials and expressing their opposition to any measures threatening their constitutional freedoms.
Below is a list of those seven anti-Second Amendment bills here in Colorado, six of which have an attached action item where you can contact your representatives or members of the relevant committee to voice your opposition for the bills.
It is more important than ever for citizens to stand up and defend their constitutional rights. By taking action now, we can ensure that the voices of law-abiding gun owners are heard, and that our Second Amendment freedoms are preserved for generations to come.
HB24-1292 - Assault Weapons Ban
This is an outright weapons ban. The bill defines the term “assault weapon” and prohibits a person from manufacturing, importing, purchasing, selling, offering to sell, or transferring ownership of an assault weapon. The bill further prohibits a person from possessing a rapid-fire trigger activator. A person in violation of the prohibitions will be assessed a first-time penalty of $250,000 and $500,000 for each subsequent violation.
But don’t worry, the government will keep you safe! This law does not apply to a member of the United States armed forces, a peace officer, or other government officer or agent. Rules for me, but not for thee.|

HB24-1349 - 11% Excise Tax on Firearms & Ammunition
This bill seeks to add an 11% excise tax to the purchase of all firearms, firearm accessories and ammunition in Colorado.
Firearms and ammunition are already taxed at an 11% rate through the Pittman-Robertson Act, in addition to a variety of other state and local taxes.
Since this is a tax increase, passage of this bill in the Legislature will automatically place the question on your ballot this November thanks to TABOR.

HB24-1270 - Requirement of Firearms Liability Insurance
This bill will require firearm owners to maintain a liability insurance policy. Failure to maintain firearm liability insurance will result in a $500 fine for the first offense, and $1,000 for the second. Individuals who are denied insurance, or who cannot afford a policy are able to petition the court for an exemption on a case by case scenario.
Not only is this likely unconstitutional, you could also apply the far-Left Democrat’s logic and state that anything that is cost prohibitive is also racist.

SB24-066 - Firearms Merchant Category Code
This bill will require payment processors to assign unique codes to any purchases of firearms or ammunition, threatening a $10,000 fine to any processor not in compliance.
Recently, we have seen instances of “woke” banks de-platforming certain businesses who sell weapons, and a requirement of transaction codes like this only makes it easier.
Additionally, this also creates an expanded paper trail of weapon and ammunition purchases which could be used to spy on individual citizens illegally.

HB24-1174 - Concealed Carry Permits Training
Under existing Colorado law, an applicant for a permit to carry a concealed handgun must already demonstrate competence with a handgun. This bill aims to drastically expand the training and education involved in exercising your Second Amendment rights.
A law such as this will only hinder law-abiding citizens’ ability to defend themselves and their families by burdening them with time consuming training and cost prohibitive classes.

HB24-1348 - Secure Firearm Storage in a Vehicle
If passed, firearms stored in unattended vehicles will be required to be kept in a locked, hard-sided container and kept out of view or locked in the trunk of the vehicle. Civil penalties for infractions can reach up to $500.

HB24-1353 - Firearms Dealer Requirements & Permit
A bill which creates a state permitting system for federally regulated firearm license holders. The new permit adds one more layer of scrutiny and potentially state sanctioned harassment of already highly regulated businesses.
