Civics in Homeschooling?

By Sarah Brown

I homeschool my children. I love teaching them, especially history. But I can’t teach American History anymore without a chip on my shoulder. It turns into teaching what America was versus what America is. And that is sobering.

Simply going through the Bill of Rights with them will cause me to pause. We don’t have many of these anymore. Not just from the coronavirus disaster (the govt disaster, not the virus), but from government taking control of many many areas that it doesn’t have authority over.

Our founders built this nation on God-given principles. They rejected the idea of a monarchy, let alone dictatorships! They built it on many ideals found in the Bible- equality, justice, mercy. They purposefully crafted our government to be fair to all, to control the power of one man or even a handful of men. They saw what happened when one man, or one group, had too much power.

But that is where we are now isn’t it? Governor Polis has been biding his time the last year or so, then Rona hit and his true colors are out! He may not be as outwardly nasty as other governors or as forward with his intentions. But to me, that’s even more dangerous.

He’s signed 90-ish executive orders since March. The legislature finally got back, but they aren’t doing what they promised. They should be focusing on essential legislation, but are ramming through this mandatory vaccine bill and this anti-police bill. Both are hugely partisan, very controversial, and not at all essential.

They scold us for not social distancing and we get shamed at every commerical and yard sign for not staying home or else we’ll kill millions of people by going to the post office. Yet a representative, who’s a nurse by trade, comes back from serving in a hospital to fight the coronavirus and jumps right back into the legislature no questions asked. What was that Q word again I keep hearing over and over again? Hmm…

To add insult to injury? Democratic Representatives and Senators have been saying they don’t want to have hearings on these bills because they feel like they are being “held hostage.” Hearing from constituents is such a burden don’t ya know? Forbid us to email one from a different district, you’ll get an automatic email back that says “we are priortizing people from this specific district.”

Or they say that the reason an opposing viewpoint wasn’t brought to the table is because they “are on the menu.” They schedule hearings on a Sunday, something hardly ever done and only for a show of power.

Or on the off chance you actually get to talk to an aide, but get ignored after the first response because they don’t actually have an answer to your questions, and they can’t be bothered to actually try to communicate to us lowly serfs.

I can’t tell my kids anymore that these are men and women serving our state, our nation. Because that’s a lie. They are serving themselves. They are serving the lobbyists lining their pockets. They have disregarded the Constitution. They have disregarded the ideals this country is founded on. They have disrespected those who died for freedom.

God bless the men and women there for the right reasons. God bless them for actually following our Constitution. I know many are there, and let me say to you reading this- Thank You! Please continue to fight the good fight.

Hopefully soon I can teach and show my kids the beauty of the electoral process, the balance of powers, the justice and freedom ingrained in our nation’s blood. I pray for them to see that, not to idolize America, but to be simply be thankful and not squander the good gifts God has given us here. The art of appreciation has been lost, but how I hope it is rekindled!

For now, it’s all a compare and contrast lesson from 1776 to 2020.
